Need to cover multiple subdomains in ONE certificate?
Wildcard SSL Certificates are the cost-effective choice for Multiple Websites & Webservices / API Servers on a SINGLE domain
Wildcards are Domain Validated certificates which can be used with multiple websites or hostnames (subdomains) set up on a single top-level domain name.
Wildcard SSL certificates cover the root domain name and any first-level subdomains such as:
- example.com
- www.example.com
- abc.example.com
It cannot be used with second-level or third-level subdomains such :
- www.abc.example.com
- xyz.abc.example.com
For example, a Wildcard SSL certificate for *.iwebz.net will protect www.iwebz.net and cloud.iwebz.net, but NOT www.xyz.iwebz.net which is a second-level subdomain, www.getssl.in which is set up on a different domain name.
Want to change the hostname to ssl.iwebz.net from tls.iwebz.net? No worries, the same Wildcard certificate can be used for the new name too since it is a first-level subdomain of iwebz.net
The benefit of a Wildcard SSL certificate is that you need to get just one certificate for all your subdomains. This removes the need to get one certificate per subdomain as in the case of Regular SSL certificates. This also helps to easily manage the renewal of SSL certificates for all subdomains by replacing just one Wildcard SSL certificate.
Wildcard certificates are set up/installed just like regular certificates. Instead of using one certificate and one private key to set up https for each subdomain, the same private key and certificate are used to set up https for all subdomains.
